You need Real Salt – From the Sea – Not sodium
This article talks about Sea Salt and what is available in today’s market, so you don’t have to “March to the Sea” to get any. After my last article on Stomach acid and the need for Sea Salt, I thought a list of Sea Salt products would be helpful.
Salt is considered by most of modern medicine to be the leading culprit for high blood pressure, heart health and other health problems. High sodium intake is bad for your health and can lead to heart attacks, and kidney problems. It isn’t the salt it’s the Sodium chloride. I have in previous articles discussed the value of salt and this article will not discuss it further. I have written SALT IS GOOD FOR YOU; It is essential to life, good health, and maintaining good gut flora. It is the Sodium that’s bad. Table salt is almost all Sodium (95%). Salt is not Sodium. Salt is good Sodium is bad. Search the site for a more in-depth discussion about sodium and salt.
What is Sea Salt?
Unrefined Sea salt is called sea salt because it originates from the sea. Unrefined means it has not been processed by man. It may be sun dried but nothing has been added – It is in its natural form. It comes from modern oceans, dead seas or ancient sea beds buried deep underground. There is black, Dead Sea, grey, iodized, kosher, pink, red, natural white, and the list goes on. Salt from the sea and salt high in magnesium are not only safe but can be therapeutic for someone with heart disease. Sea Salt does contain Sodium but at lower amounts than regular table salt.

The label to sea salt will clarify its sodium content, if it is real without additives and with the 60+ trace minerals or if it is refined sea salt with additives. Read the Label and don’t buy refined that is the same thing as Table salt no matter what they say the Sodium content is.
The content of Sea water and Sea salt is similar to the content of our own blood. Our body is 75% water. This water that is contained in all of our blood, cell, tissues, etc. is a salty water solution very similar to the seawater. Sea Salt contains minerals and trace elements needed by our body for the electrolytic process that keeps our body alive. These are: bicarbonate, chloride, potassium, magnesium, and sodium. Sodium content ranges from15% to maybe 25% Sodium in most popular brands of sea salt.

Natural Sea Salt of the Sea
There are three basic ways to obtain salt. First, salt can be mined since it is part of natural rock formations like halite. Second, salt can be obtained from the ocean and produced by evaporating the water and leaving behind the salt. Third, the salt from 1 and 2 can be processed by heating, bleaching, adding preservatives, chemical compounds and conditioning agents and then sold as table salt.
Sea Salt comes in many forms and colors
Sea Salt can be course or fine.

Clik here to view.Course salts with large-grained crystals are best used in a salt grinder. Course salts are not as moisture sensitive as the further ground salt allowing them to be stored for long periods. Note: large-grained salt crystals are often called Kosher which does not have any reference to it religious certification.
Sea Salt can vary in color; Black, Grey, Pink, Red, Pure White, and others.
Food experts are saying that if the label on the packet says “sodium chloride” then what we have is nothing more than refined salt. Another indicator is the color of the salt. Pure white would mean refined, grey-ish white or pink, for instance, would mean unrefined. The minerals are represented by the color. They say that salt that is truly unrefined could contain 90 or more different trace elements.

Clik here to view.Salt comes from almost every Sea across the world. Some salt products are marketed and have become popular and some are still localized in the particular country.
Celtic sea salt or Grey salt: Grey salt, collected by hand on the Brittany coast in France, is considered one of the best salts by many in the culinary world. The unrefined salt is loaded with minerals (High in Magnesium), and provides a rich, luscious flavor. 19% Sodium light grey in color. Since 1986 Celtic Sea Salt is certified Kosher by the Atlanta Kashruth Commission, and also is certified to be organic compliant by Europe’s Nature et Progrès to be free from pesticides, herbicides and harmful chemicals.
Fleur de sel: Is a rare and expensive form of sea salt. It is considered the caviar of salts, this specialty salt is hand harvested from the Guerande region salt ponds in France. The name fleur de Sel is from the French for “flower of salt”. The salt blooms like a flower on the water’s surface under “just right” weather conditions. It’s only harvested once a year. It is said to melt slowly on the tongue with a lingering, earthy flavor. Naturally white in color Sodium in 27%. Similar high-end sea salts are produced in parts of Spain, Portugal and the U.K.
French sea salt: (Sel Gris) Hand harvested from the Atlantic coast of France, this salt is unrefined and high in minerals, especially natural iodine. Commonly referred to as grey or gray sea salt, Sel Gris is harvested from waters below the surface that have passed through multiple clay basins, resulting in a higher concentration of minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, manganese, and potassium, as well as a light grey mineral coloring. Colored gray by the chemical deposits of the minerals in the salt beds, this salt is harvested primarily in the Brittany region of France as the water evaporates from moist basins leaving the crusty saline as residue. Gray salt is an unrefined form of salt sought for it purity and rich natural sea flavor. The salt has a moist texture and is lower in sodium chloride than other salts. Its Sodium is 15%.
Hawaiian Alaea sea salt: Traditional red-colored salt used for preserving and seasoning foods. Enriched with Alae, a volcanic baked red clay, which adds iron oxide for color and flavor. Earthy and mellow tasting and used in authentic Hawaiian dishes. No Iodine.
Hawaiian Hiwa Kai or Black sea salt: Black in color due to the addition of activated charcoal, which enhances the flavor. The charcoal is known for its ability to aid a detox as well as neutralize stomach acids, helping to prevent acid reflux. No Iodine
Himalayan sea salt: By Artisan Salt Co., is an amazing unrefined salt that comes from deep inside the Himalayan Mountains in and around Khewra, Pakistan, at altitudes of over 10,000 feet. The salt mines come from an ancient ocean and the salt is a fossil marine salt rich in minerals. Himalayan Sea Salt list of minerals is some of the highest of all sea salts. The salt is a wonderful Pink color and is sweet to the taste and 24% Sodium.
Kala Namak: Indian black salt is an unrefined mineral salt. It is actually a pearly, pinkish-gray color rather than black, and has a strong, sulfuric flavor and aroma.
Kosher salt – gets its name because it was originally designed to help in the koshering of meats. Koshering meat is a very important process in the dietary laws of several religions (especially Judaism), and many different factors are required in order for a meat to be considered kosher. 18% Sodium.
Reference to Kosher salt may not mean a salt that meats the Jewish dietary guidelines it may refer only to the size of the salt which is normally large.
Mediterranean Sea Salt – the French, Italian and Spanish sea salt harvested from the Mediterranean Sea. It is a coarse sea salt with Sodium 18%
New Zealand – From the South Seas.
Pacific Natural Coarse Sea Salt is harvested from the deep clear waters of the great southern oceans that sweep through Cook Strait between New Zealand’s North and South Islands and into the solar salt field. These waters are evaporated using the natural process of sun and wind. At the end of each summer this sea salt is gathered so as to maintain the balance of minerals present in salt harvested from the sea.
Redmond Real Salt or Smart Salt– Salt deposits from Central Utah USA. It is pinkish in color and sweet to the taste. No Iodine but high in magnesium.

Native Americans found a mineral-rich salt deposit from an old sea which is located what is now called Central Utah. In 1959, Milo and Lamar Bosshardt were having a difficult time keeping up their family farm until they discovered this salt deposit. The two began selling the salt to local farmers for their animals. The farmers were then using their salt to season their own food. After their costumers demanded the salt be used for everyday use, the company Real Salt was born.
Rock salt – Rock salt doesn’t readily dissolve in water and is primarily used for melting ice.
